As part of the “Deep-Sea” call for projects component of France 2030, Arkeocean, leader of a consortium with Bourbon Subsea Services and Seagnal, have been awarded funding to develop DESPOT (Deep Swarm Positioning), a system for positioning and guiding swarms of AUVs. The DESPOT system will allow swarms composed of an unlimited number of AUVs operating at a depth of up to 3,000 meters to position and guide themselves with an accuracy of less than 5 meters. DESPOT will be applied to swarms used for seabed data collection and ocean observation in the fields of energy, defense and the environment.

“Today, underwater exploration is still carried out by a small number of autonomous drones which are pinheads in the immensity of the ocean. DESPOT is the technology that will enable us to scale swarms to thousands of AUVs forming an observation instrument finally adapted to the immensity of the ocean.” Thierry Brizard, co-founder, Arkeocean.

Deploying large swarms of AUVs at sea is already a feat, but positioning and guiding them effectively in the vastness of the ocean is a considerable challenge. Current methods are unsuitable for large numbers of swarms, are imprecise and expensive. Arkeocean, Bourbon and Subsea and Seagnal are meeting this challenge by imagining DESPOT, the new deep, precise and above all economically viable navigation system to equip an unlimited number of AUVs.

The DESPOT concept is based on the combination of a “deep base”, connected to the surface ship, with “Long Base line” AUVs which will guide and position the swarm of AUVs.

DESPOT (Deep Sea Positioning) for France 2030

Arkeocean, provides technological building blocks and its expertise in the design and integration of complete systems. Seagnal’s mastery of sonar and signal processing will be essential know-how for this project. Finally, the presence of Bourbon in the consortium provides the operational know-how and engineering skills critical to the design of a robust system capable of operating at great depths.

France 2030 has identified the ocean and deep-sea exploration as a new frontier of human knowledge, which requires the development of cutting-edge technologies. This is the purpose of the multi-thematic call for projects “Deep-Sea” (Grands Fonds Marins) launched at the end of 2022 by the French state for an amount of €25 million and into which this new financing is included.

On 22nd April 2023, an award ceremony attended by Marie Guevenoux, French minister of overseas territories, and Herve Berville, French secretary of state for the sea and biodiversity, and the eleven companies leading projects as part of the France 2030 “Deep-Sea” program was held at the Hôtel de Roquelaure in Paris, to celebrate France’s investment in “Deep-Sea” scientific research and innovation.

As a pioneering developer of swarm systems geared toward defense, energy, and the environment, ARKEOCEAN proudly unveils LELANTOS, a loitering Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) system ready to forge the future of underwater surveillance and intelligence missions.

The world and its waters are growing more turbulent, and we must adapt our marine technology to navigate impending safety challenges effectively. With the goal to monitor strategic underwater areas, ARKEOCEAN set out to create the first-of-its-kind micro-AUV system to patrol in up to 300 meters depth in discreet swarms.

The field-tested LELANTOS system represents formidable potential for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering operations. Its proof of concept was recently carried out in collaboration with the French Navy during sea trials this December in Toulon, France.

Watch our innovative micro underwater drones go with the flow and stealthily roam the ocean, record the ambient underwater acoustic field, extract acoustic signatures of interest, and transmit them to a remote command center, before effortlessly returning to their home vessel.

  • Mission Planning is done using the command center before the swarm is released. Coordinates of designated areas adjacent to each other are assigned to each AUV so that the swarm can cover a vast perimeter. Other mission parameters such as depth, acoustic and radio communications are also defined at this time.
  • Mission Execution lies at the heart of ARKEOCEAN’s state-of-the-art LELANTOS intelligence system. Neutrally buoyant, they drift in the current without propulsion and briefly resurface when needed to check their position. They operate in a quiet environment allowing high quality recording of the ambient acoustic field. The thrusters help to reposition the AUVs when they drift outside of their designated patrolling area because of the current. When the drones detect specific acoustic signatures on their underwater reconnaissance mission, they surface briefly to beam the alert and position to the remote command center.
  • Lasting endurance sets the system apart as a swarm of our AUVs can stealthily stake out marine frontiers for days without declining battery panic.
  • Unrivaled Precision Homing ensures that the whole micro-AUV swarm effortlessly and autonomously returns to its vessel at the end of its mission to an easy-to-operate-recovery basket.

Our award-winning acoustic AUV swarm technology is a game-changer due to its accessibility and scalability. By pooling small, agile and affordable underwater drone capabilities, it is possible to generate a vast acoustic listening area, capturing mission-critical intelligence with the advantage of stealth and operational agility.

The LELANTOS system is now available as a turnkey solution that offers the most cutting-edge command, launch, listening, transmission, and recovery capabilities optimized for covert watch and loitering across remote waters worldwide.

Inspiring Inclusion: what it means to our co-founder Tamara Brizard https://arkeocean.com/inspiring-inclusion-what-it-means-to-our-founder-tamara-brizard/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 12:27:34 +0000 https://arkeocean.com/?p=137

When we spoke to our company co-founder, Tamara, software and computer engineer with a degree in archeology about getting her thoughts on women in leadership and sharing them in time for International Women’s Day, she very rightly reminded us that “…every day, is a day for equal opportunity, for everyone and a day to inspire inclusion and equality.”

Indeed, we cannot agree with this enough and we wanted to know more about Tamara’s experience as an entrepreneur and leader of a high-technology Small-Medium Enterprise (SME).

What does inspiring inclusion mean to you?

To me, it means fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, empowered and included. Our role, in our company is to create that environment and for me, it means being surrounded by a team which is as diverse as possible, with different backgrounds, ages, genders, upbringings, experiences – you name it. This is the only way we can truly spark creativity and genuine innovation. I have been the only woman in many rooms and I realized that my experience and background brought a completely different vision to the table and I value this every day at Arkeocean. Our role as leaders also means nurturing an environment where everyone can speak up to share their ideas freely so that together we can create and build disruptive solutions for the world of tomorrow.

Who inspired you to become an entrepreneur and to become an engineer?

My father is an engineer and my parents are entrepreneurs, so they definitely inspired and encouraged me. Growing up, I was always interested in inventing, creating and building things. In my time, we didn’t have many examples in the media to inspire young women to go into the sciences, one which stuck with me was Gadget from “Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers”, a female mouse inventor who solved problems in the show – I wanted to be like her. I am very happy to see that today, my daughters and my son can see more diversity on television. Later in life, I was inspired to continue on my entrepreneurial journey by women like Jane Goodall, primatologist and anthropologist who accomplished so many extraordinary feats. Attending one of her lectures and meeting her was a highlight in my journey that I will always remember.

What is your message for the future generations of entrepreneurs?

Do not be afraid to not fit in a mold, to go out on your own, to believe in yourself and your ideas and to learn from others who have different opinions than yours. Explore, invent, create new things, fail and fail again, and learn from that experience.  Above all, your differences are what makes you special. Nurture them and do not let other people define who you are – speak up and share your vision with the world.
